Do you have an expired gift card or gift certificate? If so, the Treasurer’s Office may have your money. Gift certificates and gift cards are required to be turned over as unclaimed property if they have expiration dates or services fees. If an expiration date is specified, the balance is presumed abandoned five years from the date of purchase. If they are rechargeable, they are considered abandoned five years from the date of the last owner-initiated transaction.
If you are an owner of an expired unredeemed gift card or gift certificate, please complete a general inquiry form and mail it to the address below. For questions, please call (217) 558-6227.
If you are a holder, please refer to Section 10.6 of the Unclaimed Property Act for reporting requirements and responsibilities related to gift cards and gift certificates.
