Treasurer Giannoulias teaches Little Village class
Students advised to save money
February 6, 2007
Serving as a guest teacher at Community Links High School, State Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias stressed that teens learn the value of managing their money wisely.
Giannoulias recommended that students save a portion of their allowance and paychecks every week and cautioned them about borrowing money and paying interest on credit cards.
“You’re about to enter the real world where you will be in control of your financial future,” said Giannoulias who taught at the school in Chicago’s Little Village community on Feb. 5. “The smart things you do now are certain to add up later.”
Giannoulias was a guest teacher in Kate Kreinbring’s U.S. History class at Community Links, housed in the John Spry Community School, 2400 S. Marshall Blvd. He volunteered as part of Teach for America Week 2007, a national effort to expand educational opportunities for children in urban and rural schools.
The Treasurer’s Office offers a financial literacy program called Bank At School. The curriculum is tied to state learning standards and is available in five languages, including Spanish, Polish and Greek.
Teach For America is the national corps of recent college graduates who commit to teach in needy schools. More than 150 corps members teach in schools throughout Chicago’s South and West side neighborhoods, reaching nearly 13,000 students.
